Very good. I learned a ton about trans identities. We love an unlikable female character. Lots of sex terms I didn't know the meaning of and had to Google. I can't write book reviews when I'm depressed. 😂

After finishing the book, I went back and read the summary. The summary makes it seems like the story is told in a linear fashion, and it emphasizes specific plot points. Perhaps I would have enjoyed the book more has this been the case.

I found the endless internal monologues of the characters boring. It feels like these sections are trying to be clever and informative, but in my reading they were dull and pedantic. I wanted to get to know the characters more, but I feel like this would have been more effective through advancing the narrative. The sections that are most memorable and characterizing to me are the sections where the plot moved forward, and I wanted more of that.

I know the point of this book was not necessarily to enjoy it. Perhaps it's not a book that was written for me at all, and I'm trying to respect that. But I was/am attempting to take in what this book is communicating, and I can't help but think it could have been more effective in its delivery.

This is a story mainly centred around Reese and Ames, however we also get the foundation stories of many peripheral characters. I enjoy a story that acknowledges the world doesn’t revolve around simple one or two characters, that everyone has a story.

The story of Reese and Ames is complicated, a duo who are sometimes friends, sometimes lovers, sometimes suspected adversaries. Like their relationship each person is deeply complex, and that’s depicted beautifully throughout Detransition, Baby.

The story poses complex emotions towards gender stereotypes and it had me thinking long after I put the book down. To further complicate the storyline it has time jumps, but is so clearly written out and depicted you won’t have trouble keeping up.

There were some technical flaws (mainly in the writing) but this totally absorbed me in a way a book hasn’t in a long time and I feel like I am going to be thinking about these characters for a LONG time.
