Until I read this, never had I ever read a book that made me feel like the unhinged woman.

I don’t know how to rate this- I didn’t love it, at times, i really disliked it, but I also think it’s a one of a kind book that is brutally honest, unapologetic, and complex.
The characters were insufferable, yet I appreciated their povs. This book is insightful, depressing, and MESSY!!!! There’s so much commentary in this story, some statements made by the main character felt really problematic, which makes me feel conflict. HOWEVER, I loved that this story pushes boundaries and reimagines the ideas of womanhood, which is why I’m glad I read it.

This book did basically everything a good book should do. As a reader it got me to think about my flaws, identify with at least one character, and make me feel invested in the characters lives. This novel follows Reese, Katrina, and Ames as they think about parenting, motherhood, and queer relationships. The characters are messy and the topics are often crude. There’s a decent amount of writing in this that is there for shock value. I had to reread or relisten to sections at several points.

The strength of this novel is in the “world building” so to speak. This book covers transphobia, sexual/physical abuse, suicide, and race. It’s done in such a realistic way to conversations I see in my life. Where there’s a cursory acknowledgment of oppression, but most of the focus is on whatever the character perceives their oppression is. It’s truly a fascinating book. I definitely want to let this sit a few years and come back to it.

This book was a bitch to go through because the topics tackled there were so complicated and hard to swallow, but it is brilliant. What I love most about books is how they expose me to different perspectives, put me into the head of people completely different from me so in result I start looking at the world around me through their eyes. The problems I’ve never considered to even exist now mount to the size of existential dilemmas and life-or-death situations.
This book goes through everything starting with gender identity, trans experience, through motherhood, femalehood, feminism, to class and race differences and how it all intersects. Definitely the best book I’ve read this year so far
