An exceptional adaptation with a striking art style that remains effective despite omitting some of the bleakness and tragedy of the source material (it's still soooooo bleak and tragic)

Working through classics I never read as an adult, I arrived at The Jungle. While much more compelling than many other classics, the diatribe of socialist propaganda at the end, really served as a let down.

As a whole this book is a good read. There are solid characters and a strong if depressing plot. Life is examined from inside the system in ignorance, inside the system with insight, outside the system, working the system and finally ending outside the system seeking change.

It was unfortunate that Sinclair chose to end the book with a bunch of socialist propaganda and monologuing instead of a proper ending. It could have been much improved as a story and even a socialist book if the last 30 or so pages had been trimmed altogether or replaced with a more satisfying conclusion. Sinclair went from incredibly compelling showing to exclusively telling to get his point across when the showing was working so much more effectively.

Buvo įdomu sužinoti apie Čikagą praeito amžiaus pradžioje, bet skaitėsi sunkiai: tiek nelaimių vienoje knygoje neatsimenu kur dar skaičiau...
