Disturbing and yet also a bit underwhelming.
We were supposed to read this at school and tbh, I just read the summary bc the beginning already put me off with the nightmarish depiction of Coppelius and the eye stealing sandman.
Now reading this much later, with the intent of seeing what Hoffmann wrote about his automatons and being interested in the "mechanical human" aspect, I actually finished it. I am not really a fan of the letter format and I enjoyed the prose second half of it a lot more. Also interesting to see how the narrator actually adressing the reader.
It is a story about childhood trauma and its effects on Nathanael's life as he even years later is still scared of Coppola/Coppelius as the embodiment of the eye-stealing sandman. There are many ideas in this book that could have been explored more / been more the alchemistical experimentations, the mechanical human, then again I guess they were just sideplots to exploration of Nathanael's trauma.
All in all, it felt a bit directionsless for me and with a bit unexplored potential. Maybe this should have just been a longer story.
