You might think there would be a little more about the Queen in this book given the cover and the title, so I’m going to start this review by saying that this book is about a group of people at a hotel during the time frame in which Queen Elizabeth’s coronation takes place. I thoroughly enjoyed the book but want to emphasize that the coronation is something this plot builds towards and it only takes place towards the end of the book.
So, that out of the way and I’ll continue with my thoughts :)
This book takes place at a hotel named The Blue Lion. The hotel has been around for hundreds of years but has been struggling in the years since Edie inherited it. Edie has big hopes that the coronation will bring money to the hotel as the Blue Lion is in the coronation’s path.
We get to know Edie, Jamie and Stella as well as others at the hotel.
Jamie is a wonderful, lovable character. After the war, he became an artist. He has been hired to paint the Queen’s coronation. He decides to stay at the Blue Lion in the meantime so he can practice drawing the view.
Stella lost her family during the holocaust and is starting over in London. She’s just begun work at a magazine taking pictures. She also finds herself staying with Edie.
As we get closer to the coronation, strange things start happening at the Blue Lion. This particular part of the storyline picks up pace the closer it gets to the coronation.
I enjoyed this book. This author writes wonderful characters. As I was reading it, I even recognized one of the side characters as being from her previous book The Gown. I definitely enjoyed that.
I found this to be a quick, enjoyable read with lovable characters and a cool setting.
