The Bookshop is the story of Florence Green and her efforts to open a bookstore in the village of Hardborough. This proves to be surprisingly controversial and provokes stiff opposition from the establishment. It starts of as a small English village comedy of manners, but becomes much bleaker. This is not a heartwarming story where Florence wins over the locals and her bookstore becomes the community hub. Rather it’s an unflattering depiction of a small town and the abuse of power by those who wield it. Issues of class, social structure and educational inequalities are highlighted. It’s a quiet unassuming novel, filled with many finely observed details. However, the ending means it is definitely depressing.
