Gilbert's best book to date. Reading it is easy like Sunday morning, and the bubbly prose slides down like champagne.

Interesting set up. Enjoyed the second half far more than the first bit. Finished satisfied, and what more can you ask for.

I very much enjoyed this historical fiction novel of a young girl finding herself on the brink of WWII and then following her life after the war. I especially liked the parts of the story while producing the musical, even though Vivian was not necessarily the most likable character at that time.

DNF
A woman named Angela asks her father’s mistress “what was my dad to you?”
Said mistress proceeds to write her ENTIRE life story- like read the room lady. She doesn’t want to know about every dick you sat on, just her dad’s.
And we were subjected to a scene where she decides to just get her virginity over with and asks a married old doctor to do it, and his version of dirty talk sounds like he’s giving her a medical exam

Does indeed go down like pink champagne but there's just enough darker notes to keep it from being all fizz and no flavour. (And Vivian's voice is one you can't help but warm to.)
