The subject matter was excellent and I felt so badly for Jawad. The way he was treated by teachers, other students, and the police was abhorent. His story was all too realistic and frustrating. But ultimately I had trouble getting past the poor decisions Safiya kept making. I didn't like her part of the story very much at all.

This book is a must read. A well paced, emotional, and impactful read that highlights the horrors of racism, Islamophobia, and misogyny in our country today. It also highlights the strength of community, courage, and hope.

Samira Ahmed writes superbly of Islamophobia and right wing online radicalization and speaking truth to power. Jawad’s narrative voice was haunting and intimately sad. Safiya’s voice was assured and strong. I saw the twist coming but it was so much more intense than I realized it would be. The narrative voices of alt right extremists, interviews, news stories, and more rounded out the complexity of the issues. A charged reflection of the state of this country. A must read.

Such a great book. Check the content warnings but I loved how the author pulled on real life events (names, locations, etc were changed) to really pull you in to how this is happening now. Still. Every day for black, brown and Indigenous folx.

There were some very important elements in this story, but I kept feeling like I was getting a lesson delivered to me, rather than learning one by having my heart involved. That said, I will buy it for my HS because of the super important messaging.
