My review is a bit biased because I love The Phantom of the Opera, but I found that the book was a bit hard to follow along with. I'm not sure if that's because it's old language and also translated, but the sentences seemed very, very choppy to read and nothing really seemed to flow well together.

I found that I was able to follow the dialogue fine, but I had a hard time keeping track of the environment. For example, where the scene was taking place. I also had trouble envisioning the environment based off the descriptions in the book and I couldn't really ever piece places together.

I solidly enjoyed the book. It was an easy read. I've only seen the movie, although I'd love to watch the musical. The book goes way more in depth than the movie, notably giving way more context/background to the O. G. through the Persian. I was also surprised how much was told by Raoul and almost none from Christine. That it was written as a journalistic inquiry was also quite interesting.

A rarity to be sure, but I prefer the movie (2004 musical) to the book. It's not often I say that! The characterizations in the book were disappointing and a bit over the top, drama-wise. The book started out well, as far as writing, but then switched to "reports" instead of a narrative, which for me, took away from the story.

Honestly, this is another book I should have dnf'd. I actually haven't seen the musical/play so I really didn't have much context coming in. I could get into parts of it but most of it was a drag for me. I wonder how different the experience would be if I knew the material prior.

Enjoyed it enough, found the difference between it and the musical interesting. Clearly well thought out and I enjoyed the extra depth to the character of Erik through the Persian.
