Right from the start, we are thrown into the world of Phoenix Racing. Of Flame and Fury takes off at lightning speed, just like the phoenixes, and it doesn’t stop for a second.
We follow Kel Berra and her team, who will do whatever it takes to win. This isn’t a game for them, it’s their livelihood. They’ll do anything, including adding Coup to their team.
Coup is reckless and arrogant, and everything Kel hates (insert all the slow burn enemies to lovers squeals here!)
When tragedy strikes, the team is forced to make hard decisions and potentially sacrifice some of their morals to do what it takes to win the fortune.
This is BARLEY scratching the surface of what all entails in Of Flame and Fury.

I received this as an ARC and it is an amazing book! It's very much YA so expect that type of writing but I love the constant world building Mikayla does throughout the book. It wasn't overwhelming or confusing, but I did highlight so many info that I referenced back to. I mean phoenix races?? Come on! It's very much like Death Race with phoenixes with a touch of Fourth Wing. There were mild twists that I did see and a few that took me by surprise. The imagery she writes is so vivid that I could honestly see this being turned into an animated series or movie, and I would just love to see that play out. The story is well written, the plot is interesting, and the character background and development kept me interested and curious to know more. I was planning on buying this anyways because I do love the book and cover, but now because the ARC didn't include the epilogue so I need answers!

It took me a while to get this story, but I enjoyed it more as I got to know the characters better and as the stakes for the phoenix rider, tamer, etc. got higher.

When her team is left short a rider, she’s forced to partner with “Coup”—the cocky, frustratingly talented MMC. Their reluctant alliance fuels an excellent enemies-to-lovers arc that simmers with tension but never quite boils over. No spice here, but the slow-burn buildup makes every moment between them count ❤️🔥.
The world of phoenix racing is creative and vivid, and the story acts as a powerful reminder: if something seems too good to be true, it probably is. It also hits a strong emotional chord about loyalty and protecting the people you care about at all costs 🤍🛡️.

There is a slow burn romance with a fake dating twist but this is not a romantasy. The plot is complex and layered, unraveling like a phoenix molting before its rebirth. It’s painful, it’s intense, and it pays off.
The stakes are sky-high and the characters are literally racing for their lives. This book made for an adrenaline-fueled read I couldn’t put down.
10/10 would race again.
