Slow to get started but then by the end I couldn’t put it down. The epilogue is beautiful and ties up the book so nicely. This book doesn’t allow you the satisfaction of knowing what comes next until you absolutely need the information, which sometimes I like and sometimes I didn’t. The two kind plot of the story didn’t fully come together for me, but that’s ok! Overall, a solid read.

Krueger’s style reminds me of the Southern Renaissance authors. His voice in this novel got a little lost toward the end. We missed the development of the villian’s character almost entirely. That being said, the plot was intense and modern. The audiobook was particularly well read.

“The River We Remember” by William Kent Krueger is a literary masterpiece that skillfully weaves together elements of historical events, murder mystery, and character development. Krueger’s prose is nothing short of poetic, painting vivid images of the Minnesota wilderness that serve as a breathtaking backdrop to the story. His ability to evoke a strong sense of place and time is truly remarkable. The novel’s incorporation of historical events, particularly the tragic events of the 1960s, adds depth and authenticity to the narrative, making it more than just a murder mystery.

Krueger’s character development is equally impressive, as he crafts complex and relatable protagonists who grapple with their own demons while trying to solve a mysterious murder. The characters’ emotional journeys are deeply moving, and readers will find themselves deeply invested in their fates. “The River We Remember” is a masterful blend of literary fiction and suspenseful storytelling that lingers in the mind long after the final page is turned, showcasing Krueger’s exceptional talent as a writer.
