The best books for any reader are those that reveal things about oneself. Early in this book, I mused on why it resonated so much. I determined it has all the things I like most in a novel: a beautifully wrought sense of place and location, a wide array of complex characters holding right to secrets, and wide-reaching tension stemming from a violent or profound incident.

I don’t think this book totally nailed the landing and some of the author’s character choices felt a bit on the nose, but I remained invested because of the beautiful language and the gravitational pull of the setting.

This was such a good read(audiobook) for in the car. I kept thinking about it long after I finished. Cool to read a book set in MN

The River We Remember has an interesting plot and the last third of the book is the most exciting. But the characters are just not well developed at all, in my opinion, and there are too many random side stories that don’t need to be in the book.

The book centers a great of white feelings at the expense of 1-D portrayal of the characters of color.  It just was so jarring and kind of hard to overcome.  A great of apologizing and hand wringing for the "times" as there could not have been a world where the white characters could have been braver against prejudice.

Audiobook. Beautifully written, complicated story of a small town in mid-20th century America.
