A fledging Austin is the main character. True crime, but much more than that, as well.

True Crime books should not be boring, but this one was. The author focuses so much time on useless facts and description not even relating to the murders, it became frustrating and tedious to go on reading.

Enjoyed this very thorough history of a serial killer who terrorized Austin from 1884 to 1885. It just was frustrating that the murders are still unsolved! But I did like how it ends with the author talking about his own investigation and research, and how the book touches on how the murders fit into larger cultural context.

Nice overview of Austin, Texas in the mid 1880's and the killings and the hysteria surrounding them. If you were a black man in the area you were guilty. This books doesn't do typical blood and gore criminal details but is more like a history.

I might try reading this again later, but as other reviewers have said, there are way too many details included. I found myself having to slow down and think more in order to follow the story. It’s like the author felt he needed to include every cultural detail that was happening at the given time which just left me confused and irritated.
