Anna’s worries begin to spiral after her mother gives birth to twins and life becomes slightly more hectic in the household. It appears that no one has time for her anymore, which can only mean that the babies must be trouble!
A story about learning to accept the changes that occur with the arrival of new siblings, and coming to understand that a shift in family attention is never a reflection upon the love that has always been held. I always enjoy the Anna Hibiscus tales, and feel that what Atinuke has consistently done so well in the past is depict various close connections between family members. What really shone during this story was the feeling of uneasiness that arises for a first born child when their future suddenly feels unknown and unsettled, and perhaps how, regardless of having been told previously, the reality of this only becomes internalized when the new sibling(s) arrive.
This would definitely be an important story to share with a child during the arrival of a new baby, and for reassurance if this period of adjustment has become too overwhelming.
