Oh I enjoyed this hokey tale of Machiavellian manoeuvering within the Catholic Church but I thought the twist was obvious. The characters were a bit stereotypical too but it rolled along and if you want to know what goes on behind the closed doors of the Sistine chapel this is an ideal read. It is (unsurprisingly) blokey too - 95% male characters ...
I should also say that although my copy was a substantial 380 pages it was printed in a font to gladden the eye of any middle-aged reader. In a more standard font it would be an averagely slim volume. I read it in a couple of hours or so, so it is ideal for the festive period - read it in chunks whilst hiding from your relatives.

Read this after watching the movie - prefer the movie and the changes they made but this was still very enlightening. No tortoises in the book :(
I went into this pretty much blind, without the highest of expectations given the subject matter… But ended up thoroughly enjoying it. We love a slightly suspect narrator, and Lomeli is that excellent mix of seemingly in the know and slightly morally unreliable. Add in the catholic guilt element and you really can’t say better. Didn’t see the precise nature of the twist coming at the end either. Shoutout to Freddie for lending the book!
