"It's so hard to love you Texas," states a poem by Noemi Martinez, "with your death and denial/when you choke the stars/before they reach their destination." But not all is darkness and despair. Martinez mixes poems that detail love, loss, secret joy, secret pain. dust, flowers, and sunsets with beautiful photographs of the landscape of South Texas. This is a lovely (short) poetry collection that is easy to return to again and again, each time discovering something new.

Lovely pictures with difficult words and situations. The melding of the visual with the poetic work a spell of revealing several truths about Texas and conveying a love/beloved/unloved narrative. This series speaks to the personal and private as well as political and public. Death and incarceration are at times central to the work as is work itself. Labor weaves its way through so much of the book in vital and necessary ways. Take it slowly. Savor each stanza for their sadness and their strength.
