This was a beautiful treasury. The illustrations and wonderful, and the stories are clever and engaging. So many of them had us researching their castle to find out how much of them was true or to read other versions. We loved it so much we bought its two sister volumes.

Lovely illustrations but the art was less focused on the mythical creatures than one would expect from the title. Also I thought it a heavy book for middle graders. It was certainly heavy for me. The stories felt a bit spare at times, and it was unclear whether they were traditional tales, retellings of traditional tales, or tales created by the author from traditional myths.
