I really wanted to like this book, buecause I've enjoyed almost everything I've read by Pratchet, and I think he is a great writer. But this one just didn't work for me. I'm not a big fan of Rincewind as a character anyway, but to then add in an east Asian element that felt very close to mockery of the culture, even if I'd didn't quite cross a line, just made it even harder to read. The inclusion of jokes of the barbarians raping women also was unpleasant. I concede that at the time of writing it, they would not have been seen as offensive, but for someone who generally writes women well, it felt like a backslide.

Interesting Times - 3.5/5

Ah fairly guid Discworld tale fae Sir Terry. Rincewind maks his return affer ah lang absence (since Eric if ahm mindin richt) tae head awf fir n orientalist adventure in nae-China, joined be Ghenghiz Cohen n ah number've local rebels.

Fairly funny yin, thae it relied ah little awn the weirdness given be orientalism fir a number've the jokes. Still, ah lik Rincewind ah fair bitty n seein him awn the run aroond wis fairly guid fun.

O'eraw, ah fine wee Discworld adventure, if nae one've Sir Terry's best.

Listened tae on audiobook. Ah love Nigel Planer.

Finally a Rincewind book where I didn't really dislike the main character!

Not too much to say here.

Favorite Quotes:
According to the philosopher Ly Tin Wheedle, chaos is found in greatest abundance wherever order is being sought. It always defeats order, because it is better organized.

“Sounds a sort of name you’d associate with cheese. I mean, a pound of Mature Rincewind, it rolls off the tongue...”

“That’s not magic!” he snapped. “That’s just ... engineering!”

But ... if you put aside for the moment the certainty that something would definitely go horribly wrong, it looked foolproof. The trouble was that wizards were such ingenious fools.

‘When many expect a mighty stallion they will find hooves on an ant.’

The Empire’s got something worse than whips all right. It’s got obedience. Whips in the soul. They obey anyone who tells them what to do. Freedom just means being told what to do by someone different.

Because Rincewind knew very well that when the Four rather small and nasty Horsemen of Panic ride out there is a good job done by Misinformation, Rumor, and Gossip, but they are as nothing compared to the fourth horseman, whose name is Denial.

“Oh … and Bacon Surprise.” REALLY? WHAT IS SO SURPRISING ABOUT BACON? “I don’t know. I
suppose it comes as something of a shock to the pig.”

“Here.” Boy Willie handed the teacher a spare sword. He hefted it. “Er. I expect there’s a manual, or
something?” “Manual? No. You hold the blunt end and poke the other end at people.”

What d’you think this is, homeopathic warfare? The smaller your side the more likely you are to win?
