Gruesome stuff but it gets you in the end. The opening reminded me of Dostoyevsky and the way some of his books have an inescapable claustrophobic quality but it loosened up as it went on.
"Perhaps it is upon the instant that we realise, admit, that there is a logical pattern to evil, that we die, he thought, thinking of the expression he had once seen in the eyes of a dead child, and of other dead: the cooling indignation, the shocked despair fading, leaving two empty globes in which the motionless world lurked profoundly in miniature."
"all between a dream filled with all the nightmare shapes it had taken him forty-three years to invent"
"he knew suddenly that it was the friction of the earth on its axis, approaching that moment when it must decide to turn on or remain forever still: a motionless ball in cooling space, across which a thick smell of honeysuckle writhed like cold smoke."
"'It's us girls,' Miss Myrtle said. 'Men just cant seem to take us and leave us for what we are. They make us what we are, then they expect us to be different.'"

Disturbing but strangely beautiful, and in places equal parts insightful and hilarious. Faulkner has a remarkable knack for capturing people and places and knowing just how to baffle a reader without putting them off completely.
Not my favorite of Faulkner's. I found it flat and not very entertaining.

A book of the times with the writing style and terminology to back it up. Slow, confusing at times due to the countless names and back and forth, and gives no solace of any sort. Truly a piece written for monetary gain at the expense of those who lived in similar turmoil. Be warned, there are many racial profanities and stereotypes mixed in. Not something I'd willingly read ever again.
Gorgeous passages sprinkled throughout, because, of course, it's Faulkner, but I found the story and characters lacking.

Will need to reread this I've. Trying my hardest to enjoy Faulkner and I feel like this book is helping me understand him a little, but I'll need more.
The theme and story are horrible and terrifying - and Faulker writes with unmitigated brilliance.
