Don't let the cover put you off! The vibe of the cover doesn't match the book at all - this is a sweet, touching, slow burn with mysteries thrown in and almost no sex (exactly what I'm looking for tbh). The ending was rushed and abrupt, but overall, I enjoyed myself. I really, really appreciate the slow burn, the fact that the two guys act like real human adults, and the way they deal with emotions. This was satisfying in a way that so many romance novels aren't. Any quibbles I had with the writing were easily ignored because I was invested in the characters.

Just okay but not really okay enough to want to read more in the series.

While this was my first experience with Elle Keaton, I'm a fan of Romantic Mystery/Suspense, M/M, & Micheal Pauley ~ so I was really excited for the opportunity to review. Keaton did not disappoint and I'm looking forward to exploring her Accidental Roots series while waiting for the next Hamarsson & Dempsey to be released.
Alternating POV by chapter, Michael Pauley's narration was terrific here. I appreciated his ability to give all the characters fairly unique voices, especially considering it was a large cast.
Niall Hamarsson is a disgruntled homicide detective seeking sanctuary in the hometown he hasn't seen in a decade. Mat Dempsey is the Piedras Island sheriff and a former, but distant, classmate of Hamarsson's. Island life has suddenly become wrought with crime including the first murder they've seen in a long time. I enjoyed getting to know the Piedras Island residents and could relate to the small town feuds that Mat found himself constantly navigating. The mystery was thoughtfully crafted and it was enjoyable to experience the pieces coming together to solve Chastity's murder.
I have no complaints, however this story was heavy on the Mystery/Suspense and light on the relationship between Niall & Mat. While not a "cliffhanger" per se, there are definitely some unresolved plot points the writing alludes will be resolved in further books.
I received a free copy of this audiobook and am voluntarily leaving a review.

This is the first book in a new series by Elle Keaton and I really enjoyed this. This is more mystery with a little romance put in and it was really enjoyable to read about Niall and Matt. I am excited to see where this couple and story go from here in the next book.

This was a good start to a series for me.
I enjoyed both characters, learning their histories and watching them get to know each other again after so many years apart.
The mystery aspect was intriguing watching the pieces fall into place.
This is a slow burn for sure so prepare yourself if you're expecting something different.
