Ah Max. I like the whole disguise and covert thing he has going on and his odd but funny way of going about finding a wife. Daphne's character is enjoyable. I like how she's torn between her fascination and attraction for Max and her fear of what marriage might mean for her.

*UPDATE*
Since first picking up this book, I've read it two more times and still found it enjoyable. I especially love how Daphne handles find out about Max's secret life as an agent. I like how Foley has kept Daphne's reaction real. I would have gotten angry and felt betrayed as well.

Good book but the narratives are sometimes too long. I found myself skipping some parts.

If you're reading this and you have the urge to stop, do it. It doesn't get better.

Daphne has jilted 3 men and she's gotten a reputation for it, but otherwise she's a very caring person. Max hires a man to hunt down 5 prospective brides for him complete with profiles, schedules, etc. As soon as he meets Daphne(number 5 on the list) he has to have her, but he's been a secret agent for 20 years and he doesn't exactly know how to share or show his feelings. Watching him chase her and her reactions to it was a bit painful.
The premise was interesting, but drawn out, the writing was a bit awkward and kept pulling me out of the story.

Would have gotten 2 stars except for when the myths of the secret societies are revealed at the end of the book, the "bad" group was said to come from ancient Egyptian rituals and thus was "occult" and they "worshiped Satan." And of course the "good" group were Christians fighting for right and justice. Which is ironic because the myths in the book originated from the Crusades - you know, those big, ugly wars where Christians invaded other peoples' homelands and killed thousands.

So this one started out slow and I actually abandoned it for a while, but then I randomly picked it back up and I am so glad I did. There are a lot of layers to this book. There is a great deal of steamy goodness but there is also such an intriguing cinematic action plot... it really makes me want to blast through the rest of the series. I gave it 4 stars just because of the slow start to it...

Lovely read, and a series in which the story continues into the next book. I would say that I was hopeful that the story line would be wrapped up in this first book and then move on to another. However I'm just as happy to continue on with the story as the books go along. Gaelen Foley writes a wonderful romance encased in mystery of the Inferno Club, and you don't truly come to know what the Inferno Club is until the end of this novel. I would say that I'm curious to see how every thing plays out between Max and his childhood nemesis now that they are pitted against each other so to speak!
