It’s hard to imagine living near Germany around 1940.
Even today, with all the legislative persecution of minorities and LGBTQ people, as a straight, white man it’s hard to imagine that anything like Nazi Germany could truly come to pass.

And yet this book hits hard. This is a much lighter book than I imagine part two will be, but still it’s so heavy. Seeing this family go through the war, from disbelief to living in a cellar trying to avoid Auschwitz… it’s heartbreaking.

The art is simple, with different animal species representing different groups of people. And the story is split between the author talking to his father in the present day and showing us the things from the 40s that he is talking about.

It's a horribly sad story and I hate that it was left on a cliff hanger, however I absolutely shall be reading the next installment

This graphic novel follows a man interviewing his dad about his survival of the Holocaust, with the intent of creating the comic that the reader is currently experiencing. Amidst the heavy topic covered, there’s humor woven into the present day as well. The characters are nuanced and have their own flaws that create their own problems. The character Voice was incredibly strong and I really felt as if I read a full story. I’ve already requested the next volume from my library.

read this for school and i still have no clue why Maus is a banned book. it's such a unique way to bring up and discuss the events of the Holocaust and was very straightforward with it. if you like WWII literature and enjoy graphic novels, check this one out!
