Milton's epic poem has beautiful cadence throughout his work. It is a very interesting retelling of Genesis with some embellishment and imagination as he examines conversations surrounding creation, the fall of man, and the plan for redemption. I was surprised at how much mythology he incorporated into the script. It is an impressive piece of work especially considering the fact that he became blind prior to writing it. The theology is off in places, but overall it was a good read.

I should read poetry more often. However, just fyi, I didn't have time to read the second epic. I only read about the losing of paradise. And that, my friends, is worthy of the "classic" label.

Exquisite poetry. Beautifully crafted language that should be marvelled at, enjoyed.

And sheds light on the root of so much of society's misogyny. For that, don't blame Milton - he replicated prejudice contained in the source material!

Though the afterword in this edition is horrible, I think having a better understanding of Milton and the historical and cultural reality surrounding the creation of these texts would be helpful in making them more intelligible.
