This book was a trip down memory lane for me. I first read this book when I was about 8 years old, and remember instantly falling in love with it (and with Sam.)
I have since read a lot of criticism about this book: it's not believable, it teaches kids to be unwary of strangers, it romanticizes running away. To those people, I say take a chill pill. This book is a fantasy, not a survival guide! I never once considered living in a burned out tree and subsisting on turtle and tubers. This book ignites the imagination and teaches children that they are not powerless when faced with struggles.
Truthfully, the saddest part of this book is when Sam is found. I believe the author's message was about the futility of trying to live outside of society. We can try to escape but, eventually, we all get found.
Use this book to teach children the difference between loneliness and being alone.

It is a book written about what kids dream of: running away to the woods and living off the land. It’s cute, and not too graphic with the descriptions of hunting. However, is isn’t very realistic. It seems to be a more idealized and dream-like experience.

Realistic? Not at all, but a darn good survival story for young readers. A good comp for Hatchet.

Even though I really do hate the ending, I can't not give the book five stars. In some ways, this is The Book that shaped me and I can't ever fully get away from that.
