George’s writing is pretty clunky in the beginning but you find the grove of it.
It’s slower than you’d expect but extremely readable. Id suggest this to anyone wanting to get into fantasy because it’s such an easy read.

Sweet Sansa is my favorite. Daenerys is the definition of gaslight gatekeep girlboss.

Haven't read since I was much younger so I really appreciated the reread. Generally a lot more magical than the show which as a fantasy fan I appreciate

The first half of this audiobook is really well paced but I gave this novel 4.25 stars because there were parts of the novel which could have been shorter in my opinion
I found that, in my opinion, that I felt this the most with Catelyn but this could be due to the fact that she is the weakest character in the book in my opinion

But, I believe that the narrator did a fantastic job narrating the book as it kept me engaged throughout and I will be continuing onto the second book.

doesn’t get any higher cause i did enjoy reading it and it wasn’t boring but there’s only so high i can rate a book which profits off of incest and hurting women. and i get that it’s mimicking historical attitudes but it also sucks to read that much sexism. very strong characters tho, they’re all so unique and interesting and i did enjoy reading it i just wish that these topics weren’t such a casual addition to the books

Readding this review after some thought
Possitive things: Daenerys' story, dragons and whitewalkers.
Negative: Cant write 10 year olds for shit. The rape fantasies are longer(multiple pages) than the loving spouses sex scenes.
The only reason I didnt DNF is cause I wanted to see how it ends but not worth it
All the TWs

honestly, to rate this book anything other than five stars would be an absolute lie. it was an incredible fantasy story and really fleshed out and i’m so excited to read the rest of the series (hopefully george will finish it by the time i’m closer to the end, lol). i loved the tv show a lot so i wanted to read the books, too, and they are so much better and more poignant and intriguing. definitely check the trigger warnings for this if you have no idea what the books or show is about, of course, but i’d recommend this to literally anyone. my favourite chapters were definitely ned and daenerys- they were the most interesting in my opinion. i feel so sad for the women in westeros / the “a song of ice and fire” universe, though- they deserve so much better, especially sansa.
“the common people pray for rain, healthy children, and a summer that never ends,” ser jorah told her. "it is no matter to them if the high lords play their game of thrones, so long as they are left in peace? he gave a shrug. "they never are." “
“and for the first time in hundreds of years, the night came alive with the music of dragons.“ the prince that was promised.

I haven't seen the show, but hear they aged up the characters; that is unquestionably the right choice. Daenerys' age (and Sansa's, towards the end) make a lot of details feel very unnecessarily disgusting. Although I do not feel this was done with any sort of bad motive, it still significantly lowers the rating for me. However, I deeply enjoyed the court intrigue, and the world is fantastic; the world feels massive, deep, and alive, and I like that the magical elements of this medieval fantasy work are more understated and uncommon than you'd normally see.
