I wavered between four and five stars, but settled on four for a few reasons.

First off, this is a phenominal book. It is one of the best epic fantasy books I have read in years and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I learned about it from my brother telling me about this HBO show they were doing, and it's been wonderful reading along with the series. I am pleased -- which, if you know me, is saying a lot -- with how true they are staying to the script.

But that's the show, not the book.

This is a wide-reaching book. Martin is covering so much ground -- literally, an entire world. Therefore there are a bajillion (yes, that is the actual number) narrators that all need their own story development. That makes for some slow points in the book, and leads to some frustration, too. (Especially in the beginning I was reading mostly to reach the Daenerys and Arya chapters.) But later, I was reading them all for their individual experiences and voices. The characters and their quirks grow on you, and I love them all dearly, if not quite equally.

A Game of Thrones is also the most topsy-turvy, "holy shit!" moment book I've ever read. SO MANY TWISTS! ESPECIALLY towards the end I was thinking "can he DO that?" And sometimes authors throw in crap just to try to make it more exciting. And while there's a lot of excitement, none of it feels forced. Which is something.

HIGHLY recommended. A MUST for Tolkein, R.A. Salvatore, and Alisson Croggon fans.

THE KING IN DA NORF
Still gut wrenching and riveting as a second read. Could not put it down, but I had to many times because it’s so damn long.
