I'd give this retrospective 6 stars if I could.
Aside from the nostalgia that is invoked from looking back on some of my favorite tv shows from my most formative years, learning how one show influenced another which led to another is really truly interesting. This could have been a very dry book but it wasn't. The lessons were swiftly interspersed in the series summaries. A fun and fascinating read.

As a person who has worked with teens for the past decade I love engaging with content that actually values and appreciates what teens do for society as a whole! Teens are so fun and really do make a stamp on the cultural flow within American society! I hadn't seen every episode of the 7 shows covered, but that didn't lessen my appreciation for this book! I would love to see a literature version of this book!

Fun and breezy read that made me want to watch (or rewatch) many of these shows.  It's interesting if you like the shows thought not terribly critical or thought-provoking. The author relays the polished PR-approved stories from actors and writers, sometimes acknowledging but mostly downplaying abuse or toxicity onset.

Another case of mistaken expectations, I fear. Freaks, Gleeks, and Dawson's Creek: How Seven Teen Shows Transformed Television reads more like an oral history of the making of seven teen shows chosen seemingly at random---presumably based on the author's own interest and taste---rather than an in-depth analysis and examination of the impact these shows had on teen television. The "how" in the title is largely ignored for surface-level interviews with writers and actors; had I known this was the case beforehand, I probably wouldn't have even picked it up to begin with.

An interesting retrospective of seven influential teen shows from the 90s and 2000s. It’s enjoyable, even if you haven’t watched all the shows, with a lot of behind the scenes and production info. (My only little quibble is the narrator mispronounces Wilkes-Barre three times!)
