If anything I enjoyed this even more than the first. Just unique - I can't think of anything like it (although having read it I am now much more conscious of its influence, descendents, and imitators).

Gormenghast is a perfect sequel, a direct continuation of story and quality with fresh events and characters swirled in to keep your continued interest. Old characters become fond faces, conclusions are dramatic affairs. The bittersweet ending cleanly wraps up all of the threads but Titus, who is to continue his journey into the third book. Steerpike became such a good villain, insidious and competent and somehow still likable.

I would not recommend reading this unless you've read the first book and want more of the same. The pace is slightly faster in this one and everyone feels a little more sane, which I appreciated.
