i thought this manga would be a cute short read with a single mum, which is a trope i enjoy in fiction. that part of the story was cute but the weird boundary crossing at multiple points made me uncomfortable. for me the worst part was the relationship between to half siblings which just gets worse as the series continues and if i would have known that aspect i would have never picked it up.

I just read Days of Love at Seagull Villa by Kodoma Naoko and I can’t be more disappointed.

The story claims to be about a city girl who moves to the country to start a new life and falls in love with the woman who runs the villa where she stays. There’s a cute baby involved too. It seemed right up my alley—pastoral and I LOOOVE stories with kids.

But this is exactly what I was afraid of when picking up a lesbian manga. It reads like it’s for men. It’s hypersexualized. The story makes no sense because we have to make room for gratuitous sexy scenes. The main character Mayumi leaves the city because her boyfriend got her best friend pregnant. She shows up to the town and is walking along the sea wall when the Love Interest, Rin arrives. Rin, for some inexplicable reason is convinced Mayumi is going to jump and starts yelling at her and they both end up falling off the wall into the ocean—but it’s not high enough to kill anybody? This entire plot point was so that they could both be wet.

Then, without introducing themselves to each other, Rin brings Mayumi to her house “to take a bath” and claims Mayumi is “taking too long” so she just gets in with her. It’s not the nudity I have a problem with but when Mayumi is like “I told you I wasn’t going to jump, I’m moving into Seagull Villa” Rin is like “well why didn’t you say so.” You’re telling me they saw each other’s tatas before introducing themselves? Then the baby, who is four, apparently has a thing “for big breasts” and tries multiple times to breast feed from Mayumi. Rin gets drunk and makes out with Mayumi who just lets it happen.

And THEN on Mayumi’s first day of school as a teacher she gets embroiled in the middle school drama and finds out the teen who lives with Rin is the illegitimate daughter of an important village person. The guy has a claimed daughter who bullies his illegitimate daughter but then Mayumi catches the abandoned teen making out with her HALF SISTER and that’s where I stopped.

I’m just so disappointed. I feel like this story had a lot of potential. I’m crushed that it was something that seemed so right up my alley turned into an excuse to write very bizarre fetishes.

1/5 fetishistic stars

I will keep reading this because the story between the main couple has sparked my interest (and I already bought the next two volumes)

However, there is some uncomfortable touching that I hope doesn't continue in the story. There is also a side romance between two half siblings which if I knew about before picking this up, I don't think I would have chosen to read the series at all. I'm going to just pretend they aren't related so I can get through the story.

Everything in this was really cute, I was loving the general plot the characters... everything until the very end and BAM! There's a weird incest subplot. It's weird. I didn't like it.

I read a bit of the following volume to see if it was just...I don't know a gag? But no, it really is just two half-sisters dating. And it's not touched on as weird beyond the fact they're both girls and that's not the problem? It's wrong cause they're related? And this is all a real shame because, again, otherwise the main couple's storyline is super cute.

ugh. maybe I've been reading too much really, really good yuri lately or something, but this manga fell super flat for me. there's an excessive amount of unnecessary nudity and a big fascination with boobs that got old real fast. at one point the child character latches onto a woman she barely knows and starts sucking on her breast??? there was no purpose to this scene, it was just another chance to focus on boobs.

the story is rushed, there's a kiss that feels very forced and it's unclear why either of these women feel the way they do about each other. there's no deeper commentary or exploration of being an unmarried working woman in a patriarchal society, or a woman who loves women, or really any kind of deep discussions at all. that may seem an unfair critique for a first volume of a manga, but when yuri like Doughnuts Under a Crescent Moon and How Do We Relationship? are being made, there's really no excuse.

I also feel like there was waaaaay too many plots shoved in here. we've got the main character and her moving to a new town, the love interest and her grief, a teenage girl being bullied because she's a "bastard child", an ex-best friend forcing herself back into the picture and half-sisters that may or may not be romantically interested in each other and apparently like to kiss when no one is looking. incest aside, it's just too much going on which leads to flattening of characters to fit everything in.

I don't think I'll be continuing in this series. there's just too much superior yuri out there now to cling to a series that's only saving grace is that it's gay.
