The Cloisters

Ann Stilwell moves from Washington state to New York City to work for the Metropolitan. Once she arrives, she finds out there is no longer a spot for her. However, she is saved by Patrick, the curator at the Cloisters, as he invites her to work for him. Ann meets Rachel, who is her mentor, and Leo, the gardener. Rachel is the type of person Ann wants to emulate, so she quickly bonds to her. With Leo, sparks fly, and she enjoys his free spirit. Rachel, Ann, and Patrick are working to put together an exhibit. They are also working with Tarot cards, investigating how far back in history they were used. About half way through the story, someone is murdered, and I spent the rest of the book reading to find out who did it. I found the atmosphere, the museum work, and the tarot cards very interesting. Sadly I couldn’t rate this book any higher due to the very slow pacing.

I enjoyed this book mostly because of the setting and subject. I certainly wouldn't say it's a good mystery, it was obvious who did what from early on, it's just the little spin at the end that's slightly surprising. The ending almost ruined the story for me, as there wasn't really a good lesson to take away or any character to root for. However, I certainly want to visit the Cloisters next time I'm in NYC. And Ann really needs to call her mother.

Overall enjoyable - especially for those, like me, who enjoy academic influence in their fiction. I think it is a fantastic fall read. Easily able to finish within two days. I am surprised by the number of reviews that are disappointed in the lack of magical elements; the description on the back does not allude to that being part of the story.

My biggest issue with the book is the ending. It felt much too convenient for the main character. Especially how Ann was able to
Spoiler just list herself as the sole author of the article. In real academia, the publication of that article would never have happened without peer review and scrutiny of the inputs/influence that her work under Patrick and alongside Rachel had on the discovery and writing.

Slow, unusual tale. Liked the psychological twists and introspective moments of the main character but didn’t feel reeled in

This one wasn’t at all for me. I probably wouldn’t have finished if I wasn’t listening to the audiobook. This had some pretty cool parts with tarot cards and fate versus choice, but for the most part I’m glad it’s over.
