Note: The length of time it took me to read this book is not a reflection of the book itself but rather how poor my health was during the month of June lol

This ended up being a pretty solid read for me. I enjoyed the setting (both the museum in NYC and the occult/renaissance historical research) and characters were interesting and multi-layered (mostly). I found myself wanting to pick up this book constantly or just thinking about it while doing other things.

I felt the author really allowed herself to delve into the darker side of the story without holding back too much. These are complex and sometimes horrid people involved. Even the main character isn't as good or innocent as we might be led to believe at first. It was fun to see how the character progressed throughout the story as more secrets were revealed or information was provided through hints and rumours.

I do think it would have been a five star read if there had been more to this book. The length is fine for the story that was told but part of me feels as though the author held back in some way. We could have had more and given more opportunity to lose ourselves into the setting and messy relationships at the heart of the book.

But, like I said, a solid read for me. I don't have much I dislike about the book and even enjoyed how slow it was at times. I'd be interested to pick up more offerings by this author in the future and I think this was a decent debut!

The dark academia vibe really comes through in the book. The first half is pretty slow and mysterious—everyone's hiding something. You can see the game and the players, but the whole point of it is still a bit lost on me. It raises the question: Do we truly choose our paths in life, or is everything already predetermined, and we must follow along? I am happy I pushed through and finished the book. I liked the second half of the book.
