It didn’t save my review so I took that as a sign. I personally did not like this book. It was a superficial read on many of the way systems affect the author and I found the continued co-opting of “white-passing” as a term still cringe worthy. However, judging from the reviews, the book hits a nerve for many in the community, so it deserves its flowers for that.
Fierce and interesting. Some chapters were new ideas to me; others more familiar.
This book put into words so many things I experienced but hadn't been able to describe.
i feel like i’ve been waiting for this book my entire life and it found me at just the right moment.
as a second gen immigrant daughter living in the US, i found this insanely powerful. it pushed me to reflect on my own journey even if it was uncomfortable. i learned so much on restructuring my worldview (that decoloniality chapter, wow, it absolutely gutted me) and learned to put names to things i’ve been feeling/experiencing my whole life.
but foremost, this really was a love letter to brown girls. that opening letter alone was enough to make me sob because yes, we are chingonas, we are gorgeous and we are tough; we are the difficult daughters. we are trailblazers and our laughter carries liberation in it. these reminders are crucial. i hope every latina finds this book when they need it most.
