I wanted to love this book. The movie has always been one of my favorite spooky throw back films. However, the book just fell flat. The dialogue was cheesy and canned. And for some reason I remember much more taking place in the movie but perhaps that's faulty memory. The novel just didn't seem to scare, or to entertain for that matter.

What a good Halloween read! This is definitely a Stephen, a book Stephen King read before writing It and Fairy Tale. Such a good premise, and so many good lines! This book was written in such a good way that many of it’s core concepts and ideas have since become tropes.

Only 4.5 stars because it to take me a little bit to get into.

Something wicked this way comes

No man is a hero to himself

Death doesn’t make things sad, it makes all the other things sad.

God I love Bradbury! This one was so delightfully unexpected. I assumed going in that I’d be getting another classic Bradbury sci-fi novel. So imagine my surprise when instead I found myself in Cooger and Dark’s world of nightmares. The writing was so poetic, the descriptions deeply bone chilling, while still having childlike-wonder. I don’t know much horror history but I have to imagine this book is a big precursor/inspiration for many modern stories.

This wasn’t for me. The writing style was not to my taste at all, I found it so off putting. The plot was confusing, I felt like it jumped around a lot and none of it seemed to make any sense to me. I think because I found the writing style so irritating that it impacted on my enjoyment of the actual story, I couldn’t really tell you what happened other than Mr Dark had some kind of circus. I don’t know what he did to the boys, if anything and why the dad was so involved. I found myself skim reading some pages just so I could get to the end because I had zero interest. Not good.

“Suddenly they were awfully small in too large a room in too big a town and much too huge a world.”

My sin: that was my first Bradbury.
I am in AWE with the use of language and flow of words. The whole book in its entirety is extremely poetic.

Sometimes I found it hard to keep up with what was going on because I was so focused on analysing the words Bradbury was using to describe something of minimal importance, which is not necessarily bad.

I loved the main characters, however I wish I had more backstory on the villains.

4.5 stars rounded up!
