I’m giving this book 3.5 stars- it started out so great but by the time there were 100 pages left, I had so many questions that I knew wouldn’t be answered by the end of the book. I think more time should have been spent on Hiram’s mother and letting us know what happens to Thena and the White family....it almost feels like the book ended abruptly after the author spent pages giving us such detail on everything else...

I LO-VED this book. LOve. It is so beautifully written and the story is just *chef's kiss*. So why 4 stars? I struggle with historical fiction that creates dialogue for people who really existed. It's a personal preference thing so for this book I wasn't able to get past Harriet Tubman being an actual character in the story.

But seriously so good and complex and magical and weird. Highly reccomend.
