The characters in this book were frustrating, but that was sort of the point. They had been through things that made them so closed off. To that end, I would have liked to know more details about Tony's experiences.

The events in this novel are well well traveled literary territory (post-WW II Europe) and the themes are just so much better developed in other novels. It was not badly written but I felt the book was not served by the flashback structure. Basically this book has been written before and written in a more moving way by other authors. There's also a very depressing/bleak outlook throughout with only a little redemption at the very end. It makes it difficult to finish the book despite the fact that it is short and not complex at all.

This is a story of a family coming back together after spending many years apart during World War II. During the war, Jan was a part of the Polish regiment of English forces. He spends part of his time in France where he falls in love with Helene, a young French woman. Meanwhile, Jan's wife, Silvana, is trying to escape the converging forces in Poland. She's also hiding a secret of her own. Neither of the main characters actions are really excusable but you can definitely see their methods for doing what they do.

I liked this book because a lot of books do not cover the time after World War II. There is a plethora of books that cover life during World War II but there are very few that cover everything that Europeans had to go through after the war.

This is a story about trying to find your way after going through a great trauma, a difficult thing for anyone to do. I'm not sure that anyone in the book handles things as well as they could have but 'tis human nature, I suppose.

Bottom line: Great historical fiction with a lot of sadness mixed in.

Another World War II story but different. This book is more about settling after the war in England. A young Polish family trying to start again. Lovely!

I wouldn't say it's a classic, but it was interesting.

Beautiful writing but could have been so much more. It would head toward rich characters that we could get to know but then would pull back and leave us wanting more. Over and over.

Haunting and beautifully written. A must-read for fans of WW2 fiction.
