The last forty pages.... Coates was on his fucking GAME. And how thankful I am that I was able to read such a clear-headed account of life in Palestine, of the Palestinian reality. Sometimes I felt that the language was leaning a bit too academic for what this book is meant to do, but I most of all feel gratefulness that I'd heard of this book, that I saw it on a library shelf, then took it home and read it.

I learn something every time I read Coates. And I’m always left reflecting.

The second half of the book is the reported essay on Palestine that caused such a big stir. It’s excellent.
The first half is navel gazing writing about writing that was a little purple and self regarding.

This book lives up to every bit of hype around it. Coates observations are linked to personal experience and are grounded in empathy but also free from bias. His words around why he didn't want to hear from both sides in the Occupied Palestinian Territories were on point. A must read
