I thought this was going to be similar to [b:If I Had a Raptor|18339694|If I Had a Raptor|George O'Connor|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1384017054s/18339694.jpg|25893054], which also features adorable illustrations of a little girl who longs for exotic pets. Instead, it reminded me of [b:No Plain Pets|3022169|No Plain Pets|Marc Barasch|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1290818134s/3022169.jpg|3052740] with more accessible artwork. Very cute!

As the first picture book I have read from VanSickle, I am definitely impressed. This made my time killed at the library much more pleasant.

Atkinson's artwork here is gorgeous, and suits the story perfectly. The story itself is incredibly sweet, funny, and entertaining. I love seeing children's picture books eith a focus on pets and mythical creatures. I definitely smiled throughout as I read the character talk herself out of each fantastic beast as a pet.

I would definitely recommend this for anyone looking for a fun picture book for themselves or their children. I also feel like it could be a potentially fun way for a child to be first exposed to mythical beasts.

Great picture book from a Canadian writer/illustrator team. I loved the illustrations, and I think the rhymes and structure (mythical beasts get introduced and dismissed quicker and quicker, until it wraps back around to the hamster at beginning of the story) make it a great storytime candidate.

I'm also just impressed by the sheer number of mythical creatures that get name dropped! I had to look up at least one which is saying something because I'm a huge nerd!

I suspect this one is more for parents than for kids. Cute, but a little above their heads.

THIS WAS SO ADORABLE!!!! I loved the images and the story. I liked that this was about mythological creatures but also about the very real pets we get as well. I will have a full review plus an interview with Vikki VanSickle on Books Are My Fandom on October 24th!

An adorable new book, gorgeously illustrated. A must-read for munchkins.

This book is pretty cute. The main character complains that her hamster is boring and wishes she had a cooler pet. She spends the book going through all the mythical creatures saying how they would be a cool pet but then finding reasons not to have the pet. In the end, she's happy with the pet she has. The illustrations make the book even better.

*this review is of an ARC from NetGalley.

THIS BOOK IS SO CUTE. The illustrations are bonkers (especially the blue-jay lookin' hippogriff), in the best possible way. The rhymes make me want to read this book out loud. I love that the main character is a non-white girl. But mostly I'm just staring at the pictures and giggling. Especially the jolly kraken holding onto the thoroughly unimpressed whale. And the phoenix's aluminum foil nest. And the manticore's gross green mouth.

a little girl sits in a manticore's giant mouth flossing his teeth with a disgusted look on her face
a little girl happily lets in a giant hippogriff that looks like a bluejay

If I Had a Gryphon is a fun children's book. It's cute, well-written (appropriate for the age range), and includes a lot of different mythical creatures. It's definitely worth picking up for kids.

If you're looking to pair it with another gryphon children's book, Gryphons Aren't So Great has a similar premise: a knight and his best friend horse discovery a gryphon and the horse is jealous because the knight and gryphon can go flying together. Ultimately, the knight decides that gryphons aren't so great, and he and his horse go back to being best friends.

Frankie! is another children's book if your child loves gryphons but graduates from picture books to chapter books. The premise of that one is a brother and sister arguing about whether they want their new sibling to be a boy or a girl, but then the new sibling turns out to be a gryphon. It includes some illustrations, is mostly from the sister's point of view, and is similarly fun. It's a little older, but used copies are usually affordable.
