Wow, surprisingly dark for a GN with a talking half chicken, half rabbit.

It's rare that a graphic novel for kids goes almost completely absurd, but Chickenhare does the trick, as Chickenhare (a rabbit with chicken legs) and his friend who is a bearded turtle, go up against an evil taxidermist who is equal parts strange and creepy. Oh, and there's also the ghost of a goat that wears a top hat, crazy cave creatures... it's a strange one.

It's strange and I really enjoyed it, however. There's a lot of humor, it strikes a solid balance between the weird and the fun, and if it kept me kind of guessing about how it would all resolve, the intended audience would be even more on board. Ultimately closer to a 4.5, this one was just a good time.

Why doesn't this have all five star ratings? It's funny and exciting and intense and kind of horrifying. So much fun.

I picked this up on a whim because of the title. It's a quirky, dark little story about some unusual creatures trying to escape from a crazed taxidermist. There's also a ghostly goat and much coveting of hats.

2.5, rounded up

LOVE the graphics but this graphic novel was a bit of a letdown overall. It starts in the middle of a story, doesn't fully explain all the threads of the story, ends on a cliffhanger -probably due to answering some questions in the sequel- has a few gruesome parts that are, thankfully, not shown, just described (eating people, for instance).

This graphic novel reminds me vaguely of the Bone series by Jeff Smith. A bearded turtle (Abe) and a rabbit/chicken (ChickenHare) are taken captive by a man who intends to sell them to an evil taxidermist named Mr. Klaus. Klaus is eager to add them to his collection and puts them in cages with two other specimens that he intends to stuff. They must escape but even if they get out, there will be other challenges to be faced. Lots of action and adventure. Unusual characters, although the bad guys are very stereotypical. A fun read. Bit of a cliffhanger ending; there is a sequel.

After my first reading, I was mostly disappointed with the exception of a few pages.

My second reading did not change my opinion which is upsetting because Chris Grine's Time Shifters was freakin' awesome.
