I found this book cute and humorous. It is a simple to read pretty even paced. If you’re looking for a Patterson book you would be disappointed here. That’s all right though! I thought it was a fun read, sure there were things that I thought – this is crazy – but overall it was a quick and enjoyable read. And there are some surprises in there!

Digital audiobook read by Suzanne Toren
1.5*

Book Number Eight in the Hannah Swenson cozy mystery series, featuring the Cookie Shop proprietor, her two sisters, and their mother, along with a regular cast of town residents. A movie is being shot in Lake Eden, and many of the townspeople get roles in the production. But a terrible accident on the set of the climactic scene results in a death, that is ruled a homicide.

This is bad on so many levels. I read it only to fulfill a challenge, because I had stopped reading this series a while back. I am completely over Hannah’s dithering over her two suitors, her mother’s constant interference, her sister Andrea’s histrionics, and Hannah’s penchant for correcting everyone’s grammar.

On the other hand, the cookie recipes are very good. Frankly, I’d rather that Fluke just published a cookie cookbook and forget about the tortured plots.

Suzanne Toren overacts every scene and character on the audiobook, making a bad thing worse. Unless, perhaps, she was purposely trying to make it campier than it already was.

I personally was under the impression that, if you write a mystery novel, the murder should be central to the plot and occur somewhat in the beginning. But in this particular book, the murder happened at the 60% mark. By that time I was so bored with the book, that the solving of it didn't hook me either.

I'm not a big fan of mystery novels using the 'film-crew and movies' as a setting / theme, so this did not help my enjoyment one bit. I found myself skimming after a good chunk in the story and around the 75% mark it was a chore to finish.

One irksome little detail I forgot to add in my previous review; Tracey. She is supposedly an extremely young character but she speaks like someone in her 17-18's. She's PERFECT in everything she does, says, thinks, acts, and it is.. REALLY annoying to read about.

I'm not annoyed with the character Ross, but I do think that Hannah shouldn't lead people on the way she does. Then again, I'm judging her by my own morals and values, but I'm not her.
Keypoint: The reader is not Hannah. So sit back and enjoy the dumpster fire.

2 and 1/2 stars
Light clean fluff as always, but even I had the whole thing figured out immediately, thus the low star rating.

It takes way too long to get to the actual murder (not counting the prologue), so the murderer's motives feel way underestablished by the time they get revealed. Also, Ross doesn't seem to stack up to Norman and Mike.

*Spoiler in post* Another typical Hannah Swensen book. I got really excited when there were proposals because I thought Hannah was finally going to choose, but then was very let down when she didn't and went on with the normal juggling two men situation she had before.
