 While reading Apollyon, I made a note that I don’t have much to say about it and that I’m still invested in the story and the characters. After finishing the book though, I realized that this is not really true and that this is my biggest problem with the Covenant series. 

But first, let’s talk about the plot in this one. At the end of the last book, Alex’ awakening happened, and we can see in the first chapters how much she changed because of it. She hates everyone that was once important to her and is just focussed on Seth. This creates much drama and angst that I normally love but here, I just didn’t like it as much. At least, finally things are happening, there are some plot twists, and the pacing is so much better than in the first two books. With this book, the plot turns more and more into a chosen one plot which is not that great to be honest. There also many elements that I’ve seen before in YA Fantasy, like characters travelling to the Underworld. 

With the characters though lies my above-mentioned problem with the story: I just don’t feel any connection to them; I’m not even able to root for the main character Alex. It’s hard to put into words, but maybe it’s because they don’t really feel like real people? Especially the side characters feel flat and have not much going for them and the ones that have potential have to die. I liked Aiden, but now he started to annoy me as well and that I absolutely despise Seth is nothing new at this point. 

Still, now I’ve come so far and with this cliff-hanger ending, I want to know how the story will be wrapped up in Sentinel.
