This novel will definitely feature on my best books of the year list.  A harrowing read at times, we get the social impact of WW2 from a part of the world we know very little about.  A highly recommended read.

Good characters - great plot. A level of 🌶 that I didn't expect, which took me out of the book. The writing itself is slow and wandering, and made it difficult for me to fully engage with the plot and characters. But it did leave me wanting to know what happens to this family. 

Very dark and grim. So be prepared for that.
