First time reading fiction based in Malaysia (finally!!) and it was really enlightening and refreshing - also one of the first historical fiction books read recently. Definitely will pick up more historical fiction to learn about wars and other cultures I don't know that much about. 

Really great audiobook - the accents made me feel at home lol. The writing was great and kept me listening. The characterization was also excellent as I could actually follow along with the many characters. I don't know how I feel about the actual family story - I almost wish that we had more at the end (can't elaborate lest I give huge spoilers...). The wrap-up was too quick, and the climax was almost a bit limp? We had such great detail about the pain and suffering the family members went through previously in other moments but over the course of the climax, the reactions were almost quiet.. I wonder if that was purposeful.

Did not like the writing. For a historical fiction there was lots of modern day terminology and slang. Characters seemed flat. Was not captured by the story.
