An absolutely stunning debut. I haven’t been engrossed in a book so quickly in a long time, but between the tumultuous plot and dynamic characters I was instantly captivated. The ending didn’t even disappoint, which is a feat given the subject matter and many moving parts. Highly recommend.

The January pick for @gmabookclub was a heartbreaking story. Gorgeously written but a tragic tale of a mother who becomes a spy during WW II putting her entire family at risk. I’m not going to lie I had a difficult time with this one. It broke my heart often but I’m excited to see what else she writes because I loved her writing style.

This is such a tricky one to reflect on. I enjoyed my reading experience despite the fact that I often struggle with historical fiction. The book coveted a topic I knew next to nothing about and did so wonderfully engagingly. And yet…

I loved the story of the mother Cecily so much more than any of the children’s… her sharp uneasy thoughts resonated comparatively much more than the (interesting, valid) strands of the three children. I also kept thinking of the poison wood  Bible’s string of narratives which made me marvel how I *could* connect to all of these different people.

One to ruminate over…
