Loved his other gardening 'bible' and this one is just as informative! I'm ready to make some self watering containers and get planting!!!

Full of great information to expand my container garden at my home. I will be using this all summer as a reference for pests, planting, harvesting and more.

About ten years ago we moved back to the inner city from the country, where we grew everything imaginable in our huge garden.
We have a fairly decent sized backyard (33x40) for a Centretown lot, but I'm always looking for new ideas to enable me to cram in more vegetables and fruits.
While I'm not big on the idea of planting in plastic, those tupperware containers are clever! I've got the bins and power-tools... all I need is some good earth to replace the road dust that makes up our garden.
I gave this book five stars just for the bins alone, but as Tarah said in her review, Edward C.Smith is the man!

I have a bad habit of picking up reference books and then trying to read them straight through with narrative books. This is very much a reference book, and it took me a while to read through. That said, it's a fantastic reference book. It's beautifully designed and full of gorgeous pictures of plants and garden tools, and it's packed full of so much information. There's the stuff I expected, like creating a good soil mix for pots and choosing the right containers and picking varieties of plants to grow in pots, but there's also stuff I didn't expect but found incredibly useful, like what pests to watch out for with each plant (and how to deal with them), how to best transplant plants, what kind of supports may or may not be needed, and even which plants grow well in the same pot. A spectacular reference book and one I will be consulting regularly when the weather gets warm enough to plant things.

Great introduction to self-watering containers, including how to make your own. Very personable and lightly humorous voice in the writing. He gives his honest opinion about plants and strategies for a container garden, but also recognizes that your mileage may vary. Plenty of photos that actually illustrate what is being discussed on the pages. I found the book especially helpful since his experience is as a gardener in Vermont - a place with a similar short growing season like Bend's.

I found this an indispensable and straightforward guide to all aspects of container gardening. I learned a lot of valuable background information that I can retain as general guidelines, and I will return to the book in the future to reference specific species' needs.

This book is a great reference to have on hand, especially if you are a suburban dweller who doesn't want to tear up her lawn to put in a vegetable garden.

I was hoping for more tips on how to grow the plants and fewer tips about how to build the containers, but that's my mistake and not the author's.
