2023- I had no doubts I would enjoy the latest installment from Mark Lawrence which proved correct throughout this enjoying read. It feels as if this book could be divided into two distinct sections which are fleshed out fantastic. The character payoff in the beginning of the novel stands out composed to the back half where they are on the ice and the book, especially character development, seemed to simmer down. The end has me reaching for the next installment and the tie in with his other series is fantastic without being dominating.

I loved The Girl and the Stars and I loved the Book of the Ancestor series by Mark Lawrence, but I struggled with The Girl and the Mountain. It seemed to drag and I found myself skimming page after page.
I'm not a person who must have action on every page, but I need to feel that "the journey" is taking us somewhere or we are learning something. In this case quite a lot of the story felt more like "filler" than a journey.
I'm sure that I will love The Girl and the Moon and the Book of Ice series - just not this book.

The world expands even more as the story progresses and the cliffhanger at the end has left me speechless.

Okay my world just exploded.

The reveal at the end of this book is insane and I have so many thoughts.

I love how much this one expands the world. And although I think the characters aren't as strong as all of Lawrence's other books. What he does with the world and also just his writing skill in this is insane. I can't wait to continue.

I also wish I hadn't waited as long as I did between book one and book two. So here is your sign to pick these up now.

The phrase "the filling in a Quinna-Maya sandwich" is now permanently seared into my mind.

Compared to The Book of the Ancestor, this series feels like an official fanfic - inconsistent, bland, flat and erratic at the same time. Safe to say that after finishing this, I've lost any interest in the actual "plot". I cut the first book some slack, hoping all the setup would lead to something interesting, but this book is not it. The problem with too intricate, convoluted plot lines is that they're indistinguishable from asspulls.

I have a long list of particular issues with both of the books, but there's no point in including them in the filling of this review sandwich.
