It starts off as a cute book from a horse's point of view and as the horse grows up the story gets more and more grim and realistic. There is a disturbing amount of animal abuse in this book that I thought would have been a cute feel-good relaxing book. Though instead of a heartwarming feeling now I know about the massive amount of animal abuse involved in horse cabs, which causes the opposite of a heartwarming feeling.

This book literally has multiple characters who wish for their own death while under horrific abuse. At one point Black Beauty wishes that one of the only friends they ever had is dead since death would be their friend's only escape from a painful horrible abusive existence.

I had only ever seen the movie and it was fascinating to read all of he direct horse to horse conversations and to occasionally get another horse's life story alongside Black Beauty's.

Perfectly readable, but not one I would read again or recommend. It's clear the author had no idea what she was talking about when it came to horses. The plot became predictable after the first 50ish pages.
