This book is so incredibly sad. Black Beauty is sold over and over again, sometimes to kind owners but sometimes to cruel or ignorant owners. Anna Sewell was apparently a crusader for the better treatment of animals and also temperance.

This was a beautiful story for any age reader, though I think it is intended for older children. I've had it on my shelf for decades as part of a classic collection, and am I ever glad I finally picked it up!

I loved that it was written from Black Beauty's point of view and that the story is relayed as he hears it/experiences it, and even though he doesn't always understand, the reader does. It's not a complex plot, but it is eye opening! I've never been terribly fond of horses, but I will never look at them the same way again.

I highly recommend it, even if you're not an animal-lover. (And if you are, be sure to have some tissues at hand!) The lessons of respect and kindness to all creatures are invaluable.

A classic full of compassion. Very worth reading.

Holding a seance to contact Anna Sewell so she can contribute to my therapy bills due to this book.

(I loved this book so much. I literally SOBBED at the end because my inner horse girl was finally at peace.)
