I had lots of emotions while reading this story. What a sad story! I am so happy to have read it now. The characters are well written. I wished I could have saved some horses. A great classic read!

Not so bad. I went into this book thinking the worst after having read another "animal" books -- which I hated -- I didn't have high hopes for this one. But it wasn't that bad.

I did find myself sometimes forgetting that the characters were horses and not people from the way Sewell wrote them.

Even though the back cover of the book claims this book is about animal cruelty, I found that it was a whole lot more.

I actually read about half of this a few years ago, but never actually finished it, so I'm feeling quite accomplished right now. Great book. Absolutely heartbreaking in places. Really makes you think about things.

I can't remember if I'd ever read this as a child but I needed a pallet cleanser after that previous book I had read this quick read fit the bill. Black Beauty is a told in a first person point of view and since it is from the horse's pov it is quite unique. This book covers the life of a horse and the different owners that it passes from throughout its life. There are many life lessons that portrayed in this book. Even though this book is set in the time it was written its lessons can be applied in any time especially if you deal with animals in anyway. Also even though this is considered Children's Literature I would say that anyone can read and enjoy this book.

Pleasantly surprised at this classic! Another example of something I’ve always meant to read but didn’t make time for. Glad I did and got to share this experience with the kids.
Parts of this book were so brutal. Sewell definitely served her intent of bringing awareness to the abuses that horses go through, especially during the 1870s and prior. I hope most horses are not treated so horribly. Jackson was asking about how horses are used today and we talked about how most horses are a cross between pets and workers.
I’m glad that Black Beauty got a happy ending despite the hardships he endured. The sad endings for some of the other horses....seemed like these events probably happened, unfortunately.

Wasn't completely sure how I would like this classic. Turns out I enjoyed it very much, great book for a younger audience.
