This book is incredible, can't believe it took me this long to get around to reading it. This is a book that deserves its place amongst the classics. It follows the story of one horse through his life which has many ups and downs, none of them under his control as he is a horse.
This a book I belive anyone should read before getting any pet but especially before owning a horse.

I've always been in love with the movie and I loved the book even more!

Yes, it's a children's book but it's still fantastic and just one of those books for me.

Didn't like this as a child.

Fun(ny) fact(s): After hearing my grandparents reminisce about days long ago with various canine and equine friends (many rescued from abusive situations) who kept them company over the years, I simply had to scratch the horse itch with another childhood favorite.

Favorite quote/image: "Only ignorance!  only ignorance!  How can you talk about only ignorance?  Don't you know that it is the worse thing in the world, next to wickedness? – and which does the most mischief, heaven only knows." (pg. 94)

Honorable mention: "This was a little joke of John's; he used to say that a regular course of the Birtwick horse-balls could cure almost every vicious horse; these balls, he said, were made up of patience and gentleness, firmness and petting, one pound of each to be mixed up with half-a-pint of common-sense, and given to the horse every day." (pg. 40)

Why: To say this children's classic is just about horses is like saying that this book is only for children.  However, told from the perspective of a horse with many owners, the themes of ignorance and common sense, hard work and laziness, courage and cowardice, and kindness and cruelty can ring true for all readers.
