Madeline Miller reimagines Greek Mythologies with such beautiful imagery. I could feel the frustration and entrapment Galatea feels as her husband traps her in the tiny room with surveillance in the form a nurse and doctor. The lengths a mother, even those who were formerly a stone statue, to save her child and the "children" who are and will be affected by her husband never ceases to prevail.

I think this short story proves that you don't need a lot of words to say something that will stay with people for the rest of their lives.

This is a beautiful and tragic story of a woman who just wanted to be free and wanted her daughter to be free.

I think the song Labour by Paris Paloma really pairs well with Galatea's tale.

i would read madeline miller's grocery list. a gem of a short story, and a strong take on a classic myth that is so widely adapted without addressing the disturbing cloud that looms over it.

“The ocean floor was sandy and soft as pillows. I settled into it and slept.”

Madeline Miller managed to give Galatea such a distinct voice in such a short amount of time. She was blunt and cunning and exactly what you would expect a woman who was previously a statue to be like. I really liked Miller’s take on this story, especially the ending.

Short but impactful. A feminist retelling of Ovid's Pygmalion where Madeline Miller gives the female protagonist a name, a voice and agency.

this would get 5 stars if it was a little longer and expanded on what happened after the ending.
more specifically, i would love to see what happened to pygmalion after he died in the realm of Hades, and if galatea would go to the underworld as well even though it seems that she turned back to stone. i'd imagine she had a soul because she lived for a time not being a statue and could think/speak for herself.
